3. Natural Acidification Only

3. Natural Acidification Only. Photo: Hans Bjurling/Johnér Bildbyrå.The acidifying effects of deposition and land use must not exceed the limits that can be tolerated by soil and water. In addition, deposition of acidifying substances must not increase the rate of corrosion of technical materials located in the ground, water main systems, archaeological objects and rock carvings.

The outcome within a generation for this environmental quality objective should include the following:

  • Deposition of acidifying substances will not exceed critical loads for soil
    and water.
  • Measures to counteract anthropogenic acidification of soil will conserve
natural productive capacity, archaeological objects and biodiversity.
  • Forestry will be adapted to the susceptibility of each site to acidification,
thus preventing the acidification of soil and water due to land use.
    • Will the objective be achieved?

The Environmental Objectives Council’s assessment is that the objective Natural Acidification Only will be very difficult or not possible to achieve by 2020, even if further action is taken. The trend in the state of the environment is positive.

    • Interim targets

The interim targets flesh out the environmental quality objectives by describing the situation in a given year.
